Recoleta District (Barrio), Buenos Aires
Probably the most touristy district in Buenos Aires is Recoleta. It's here you find an over priced arty / souvenir market (on weekends) and restaurants that charge double than outlying areas. It's also where you find lots of famous dead people in the cemetery including several ex heads of state and of course, the pride and joy of the country, Evita a.k.a Eva Peron (don't cry now!) and don't make jokes or this could happen.
If you don't like cats then don't come here because the stray cats are breeding like rabbits or indeed err ..em...cats, in this dead zone and pissing like horses and the stench of cat pish can be over powering at times. The graves / tombs are elaborate to the point of being tacky and probably cost more to build than a 3 bed apartment uptown. It's a good central location though so maybe you could invite the relatives to stay at your tomb for a long weekend after you've snuffed it.
Although the 6pm curfew could be a tad awkward unless they can scale high walls. It seems to be par for the course in Buenos Aires to have very high walls around a cemetery and I'm still not sure if it's to keep the grave robbers out or the dead people in!

Madonna is dead?
ReplyDeleteThose are some serious looking tombs, and roomier than an average row of Dutch houses
Quickie, that sounds like a wonderful city to explore and dig through the history in. I bet the museums there are mind-boggling with gorgeous artifacts. ~sigh... feeling green again~
ReplyDeleteXbox: Some of these tombs are practically penthouses compared to what poor old Anne Frank had to put up with.
ReplyDeleteLakota: There are indeed some great museums and with US$/arg peso exchange rate it makes for a cheap vacation (at least for now!)
Never mind Anne Frank, they are large compared to some of the places I've had to put up with!
ReplyDeleteXbox: True - I remember my first studio 'apartment' when lived in Queens, New York. The room was the literally width of the bed so you had to climb on and off at the end!
ReplyDeleteThe walls are to keep the dead people in. I've been to New Orleans, at nighttime, a very scary place! They look and sound very similar except for the feral cat piss thing.
ReplyDeleteBut isn't the artwork gorgeous?!?!
Queen of Goob: I like the artwork but not sure about spending so much money on dead people (when your dead your fed!) - could possibly be used for better cause.
ReplyDeleteI'd forgotten they have a similar set up in New Orleans plus a little Voodoo!
I thought of New Orleans too the minute I saw the picture.
ReplyDeleteGot married there a few years back and came away without rubbing one of the many fertility dolls...hindsight!
Xbox: Don't sell your soul to the devil and the dark arts just yet!
ReplyDeleteQuickie and xbox - like peeing in a big red bucket isn't a dark art???
ReplyDeleteVery cool . .the coffin's a bit creepy! At least they're well kept!I actually think the western idea of cremation and a little plaque rather sad! All our ancestors will dig up is little urns full of dust . . no tombs to raid or treasures to behold! I too was sorry to hear about Madonna. Maybe that's why she won't tour Australia and I just thought she was being a biatch!
ReplyDeleteQueen of Goob: that depends on if yer doing it in the day or night!
ReplyDeleteBaino: I think it depends. My sisters partner was cremated a few years ago and his ashes spread on one of his fav country spots and a tree planted on the spot. I thought that was a lot more meaningful than a big headstone or tomb.
ReplyDeleteMe mam maintains that the place she wants most to visit is Pere Lachaise.
ReplyDeleteThese pictures might change her mind.
I think Grave robbing in BA could be quite a lucrative career.
ReplyDeleteMegan: That's a nice spot alright and more international dead peeps but the architecture here tops it.
ReplyDeleteShaunj :Lucrative but dangerous - they have armed security day and night!
I thought the tombs in New Orleans were big but those are like houses. morbid.
ReplyDeleteNomadic Matt:- Apparently Argentinian dead people like a lot of space!
ReplyDeleteQuickroute,
ReplyDeleteLast I was in BA was many, many moons ago. La senora Evita was still alive.
Brianf: Welcome and thanks for stopping by. wow! that's a long time ago - I'd imagine things have changed a lot since you were here
