Update: Now that MegaUpload.com has been taken down Cuevana is not working as smoothly as before. Most of the content that Cuevana.tv points to was stored on MegaUpload.com
Netflix which is already a market leader for movie streaming in the USA is now available in Latin America. I believe it will NOT be successful in the developing world for 2 main reasons.
1. Price - e.g. Argentina (unlimited streaming) - arg$39 pesos = approx u$d10 per month is too expensive i.e. where the average household income is a fraction (approx 1/5th) of the USA equivalent.
2. Competition - Cuevana.tv (unlimited streaming) has a better selection and is FREE! (albeit not quite legit)
Both services offer streaming movies and TV programs. Netflix has some more bells and whistles and can be added to some of your existing home entertainment systems (WII, XBOX etc). Interestingly Cuevana has been available globally since 2009 and is the brainchild of 3 twenty-something year old Argentinians.
Which service do you use and how much do you pay to watch movies at home?

Hi, I don't know how many people actually read this but I found it casually googling about "Cuevana", after a co-worker mentioned it.
ReplyDeleteI have been using Netflix for some time, here are some cool and not so cool features:
- On-demand content similar to what we have with digital cable companies in the US.
- While Latinamerican Netflix doesn't boast a selection of movies and shows as wide as its US counterpart, it is for the most part tolerable, with the exception of a few shows and movies only available dubbed in Spanish or Portuguese.
- An issue with Netflix is that, being based on Microsoft's Silverlight technology, it won't work in GNU/Linux systems (as Novell's Moonlight does not have, as of now, the DRM features of MS's Silverlight).
My short experience with Cuevana:
- As any other "service" with questionably legal content, streaming media is subject to unavailability due to broken links.
- Much poorer video quality (the norm with content uploaded to Megavideo or VideoBB or whatever) when compared with a paid service like Netflix. This is to be expected of course, as you pay, among other things, for bandwidth.
- Being based on normal Flash (of course you don't need DRM for non-legit content :)) it runs on any system.
- Finally, the ever present ethical and legal implications. Even if these websites bend broadcasting laws to their breaking points, it is up to each person to decide whether it is fair and/or correct to pay for broadcasting licenses on streaming media.
Being a musician, I believe some things are worth paying for and I usually prefer to do things the *right* way (*my* right way), or if I don't agree with their policies then I'd look for a different, ethical alternative (that's why *free* software exists and defeats piracy). Let's face it, Cuevana is barely legal and though it is free (as in no pay, not as in freedom), it's content is very poor quality (unless your Internet connection doesn't allow for HD, then you may not even notice). The price for a Netflix subscription is ridiculous unless you are a hobo or a high-school student. How much do you think people pay for non-digital cable TV in Latinamerica? A whole LOT more than that.
To each their own. But even with Netflix's retarded technology choices, I think 8, 9 or 10 US dollars per month (depending on your region) is worth the availability and video quality of a paid service.
Cuevana's video quality is way better than Netflix...
DeleteMaybe it's your computer.
I like when someone takes the time to write a coherent, logic, well thought out comment that outshines the original post. Bravo!
ReplyDeletechabon, im from argentina, the netflix that arrived here was shit, it has only movies from the 90's and the quality is worse than cuevana.
ReplyDelete@Chabonymous: I know - that's why I still stand by my comment NETFLIX ain't worth it..
ReplyDelete@ AnonyCock: each to their own I guess..
ReplyDeleteI live in Panama and have been streaming on Solar Movie and Sidereel, both connect you to third party sites like Megavideo or Videobb which both cost about $10 U.S. per mo. The quality and reliability are not near as good as Cuevana. I would not even try Netflix for many reasons.
ReplyDelete@Anony: I haven't heard of those but given your poor review I'll skip them - thnx
ReplyDelete@Paddy in BA (quickroute), how have you not heard of sidereel? Retard. Many people know of that website, and the shows it has available along with the links provided. I personally think cuevana tv is better because it shows movies that;re barely released. Netflix waits A LOONG time to update there movie selections (especially new ones)
ReplyDelete@ Anony: Sidereel seems more 'TV Series' focused and this blog post is more 'Movie' focused
ReplyDeleteTo the first commenter: Cuevana is offered in bad quality compared to Netfix!? How come in my computer Cuevana is in HD then??
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's your computer...
I've used Netfix and the quality is nothing conpared to Cuevana...
