Things that Go Bump in the Night

There were 3 vampire movies on TV back to back tonight so I can't help venturing back down memory lane with more drivel. It just keeps flowin' and flowin' like the over spill from a blocked toilet!

As a wee nipper, I slept in the top bunk bed and my older brother in the bottom bunk and after watching Frankenstein one night, being last to bed, I switched off the light and as I crawled up the ladder of the bunk bed in the pitch black, my evil older brother decided to grab my leg for a laugh. I screamed so loud, I not only woke and scared the bejaezuz out of my parents but the neighbours were convinced there was some kind of torture chamber in our abode and we were the gossip of the 'hood for weeks later.

Shortly afterwards, I saw the mini TV series version of Stephen Kings 'Salems Lot' about vampires taking over a town in the USA. It had David Soul from Starsky and Hutch in it if that'll keep the ladies attention span! I still remember the scene with the kid vampire dangling outside the window which gave me the heebie jeebies for months.

In retrospect the special effects were not so special, but back in the day, they were cutting edge and I was so terrified, I went to bed every night with a crucifix made from Lego to fend off the sharp toothed demons. I would have used Meccano but it required a spanner and I've never been much of a handyman!

Got a scary or embarrassing story to share?

  1. In order to get from my bedroom to the bathroom, I would have to pass the head of the stairs.

One night my father lay full length on the stairs in wait and reached out and grabbed my ankle as I went past.

    I am still recovering.

  2. Now don't tell anyone but I am 51 years old and terrified of the dark! I have to have a light on somewhere, just within sight. Thanks to far too many horror movies, I NEVER dangle my leg outside the covers . . .cos of that arm under the bed you know!

When one of my brother's and I were holidaying in England, we were doing brass rubbings in a little country church. The place was empty when all of a sudden the bells began peeling . . we ran like the clappers it never occurred to us that they were on an electric timer in a Romanesque Church! We thought it the Hunchback or something!

  3. @ Megan: It's funny (or maybe not) how things like that stick with you forever

@ Baino: I know what you mean about needing some light - pitch black still scares me. There's something eerie about churches too. Maybe that's why I avoid them!

  4. A cross made of legos. haha to funny! I remember watching as a little girl "Nightmare on Elm Street". My idiotic older brother decided to dress up like him and gave me and my sister a good scare one halloween night. Imagine scaring like that a six and a five year old! it was funny now that I look back. :)

  5. Salem's Lot! classic.

Reading Dracula is one of the most terrifying things a kid can do, a rite of passage.

  6. I love the dark, I like nothing better than a completely dark room to sleep in. Preferably a little cold. Unfortunately the wife likes light.

When I was a kid I read a collection of short horror stories called TERROR, two stories scared the crap out of me, one about a gaseous alien that went around killing people, the other about an alien invasion of two dimensional beings that took over a town by posing as the towns-peoples shadows and gradually taking over their minds.

  7. We used to watch all those creepy vampire movies back in the 70s. My friend lived right behind a cemetary and we'd always try and sneak through the hedge and spend the night in it. We never made it a full night...

  8. @Lover of Nature: I used to think Nightmare on Elm Street was scary now it's seems so funny

@Xbox: Never read Dracula but after seeing the movie on BBC2 many moons ago I almost pooped myself

@Thrifty: Sounds sinisterly like the Mormans to me!

@VE: I always figured you for a grave robber!

  9. No, you absolutely have to READ it.

Incomparable to any other horror sorry.

My English teacher advised me to read it during the Summer while nights were short and morning arrived sooner, glad I did.

  10. My hat goes off to anyone who can finish reading The Shining all the way through without having to stop at the scary bits.

  15. I do love scary movies. And I'm with Baino up there. I do NOT leave my leg dangling from under the covers, I do NOT look in a mirrow in a dark room, and I do NOT like sleeping in a completely dark room.

Scary movie, though? The very first movie that ever scared me was the original Halloween. When they look over and see Michael is no longer laying on the ground. (I have a Michael Myers picture in the back window of my car and the window of my front door.)

    I love them!

  16. When I was reading Salems Lot the power went out as I read the scene when the priest and vampire face off. I screamed.

The 70s version was bad, the remake of a couple of years back was pretty good. Seen it?

  17. @ Queen Goob: ?Halloween scared the bejeezuz outta me too

@ Stevo: Haven't seen the remake - must look out for it though

  18. Exit light, Enter night.....

Don't diss Salems Lot. Very few King books are decent on the screen. This was an exception. It played on the more psychological aspect of fear than relying on OTT special effects.
The scene with the dead kid tapping on the window outside his brothers room is pure horror genius and has probably fucked me up for life. ;)
