Carnival Gualeguaychu Argentina

Every Saturday for two months Gualeguaychu in the province of Entre Rios celebrates carnival ('carnaval' in Spanish). I tried to see this last year but it was rained out not once but twice :-(( but we went on Saturday and the weather was well behaved this time.

A three hour bus ride from Buenos Aires gets you to the small spread out town of Gualeguaychu (pronounced Wally-wy-chu). The Carnival takes place on Saturday night but there are plenty of riverside beaches with bars and cafes to head to during the day.

Well enough of the tourism pitch and now for some photos. I have a terrible habit of cutting people heads off in photos as you're about to see.

I can see you go to the Carnaval mainly for the scantily-clad lovelies, sorry I meant to say colourful costumes and giant dragons. Is it better than the Venice Carnival?

Good lord.

I'm in the mind for a peach now...

I didn't see a single problem with any of these pictures. I am sure the guy on the drums or toms toms (sorry don't know what they are called) probably would have agreed with me....

Looking at what you ended up photographing, I think I know where your going wrong ;)
Great photos though, seriously. You must have a quality camera, and a quality eye I might add

@ Nick: I never made it to the Venice Carnival but they wear far too much clothes from what I've seen

@ Xbox: Peaches, Pears, Melons - fruit salad

@ Nicole B: It's open to ALL

@ Frank: He seemed a bit distracted alright - I hope he didn't miss a beat!

@ C'est Le Craic: It's a cheap old point n' shoot and behaves badly in dark light but I had plenty of material to work with !

@ Roy: cheers mate - but I thought you were coming here for my wit and prose?

Fruit salad has a short shelf life...

Jawsus. I've seen strippers wearing more than that. Initially.

Clearly I live in the wrong country.

That's it. I'm not following this blog any more unless there are some ordinary everyday, not so gorgeous Argentinians featured. I know they're there . .aren't they? *cries herself to sleep*

Either your arms were tiring, you're not very tall, or you were sitting down... and I take it that only women are allowed participate?

Funnily enough they celebrate carnival in NL too but it is a very very different kettle of fish hehe

@ Megan: better enjoy straight away then

@ Thrifty: Argie is not the arse end of the world despite its rep

@ Baino: OK OK - I'll go hunting for some ugly people - might be a while!

@ iWalk: It's a bit of a tongue twister alright

@ Conan: The camera was very heavy! - there were men too

@ Frank: The men just didn't seem photogenic :-(

@ Conortje: The EU version seems a tad tame in comparison

Fascinating cultural event. Think I have to investigate further.

Paddy in BA (Quickroute) January 15, 2009 6:49 pm

@ TCL: A worthy subject for investigation to be sure!

Paddy in BA (Quickroute) January 19, 2009 7:19 pm
