Hiking New Jersey Palisades

I was instructed by a higher power to rekindle my passion with hiking. This is a 30 minute drive from where I live.  The hike was from the Alpine Park HQ to the state line lookout.  It's a 6 mile easy flat return trip with great views over the Hudson river - Enjoy!

Take a HIKE you Heathen!

Me: Bless me Father for I have sinned.  It’s been 2 years since my last hike

Priest: It’s not a sin if you don’t go hiking my son

Me: Tiz a sin to me Father. Tiz a feckin’ terrible mortal sin to be sure. I used to roam the hills of Hong Kong on a weekly basis. I've strayed from the path.

Priest: How long has it been since your last confession my son?

Me: Jaezuz Father - did ya not hear me confess a minute ago?

Priest: No, I mean when was the time before this?

Me: Let me think, ah yes, do ya remember the movie - Debbie Does Dallas? After that I think. {That was a little white lie – I’d confessed more recently}

Priest: Yes, that was one of my all time favs. Has it really been that long?

Me: I’m afraid so

Priest: So besides not hiking for 2 years do you have anything else you want to confess my son?

Me: Well, I took the name of the Lord my God - Steve Jobs in vain after Apple released the disappointing iPhone 4S

Priest: I see – anything else?

Me: No – that’s it – what’s my penance?

Priest: Say two Hail Mary’s and switch to an Android phone for 4 weeks and get back out on the hiking trails – pronto! – Go in peace my son and may God have mercy on you – ya heathen little fecker!

Hiking Wilson Trail - Stage 3

How to get there: MTR to Lam Tin - Exit C - turn right out onto Lei Yeu Mun Rd East (cross to opposite side at roundabout) and continue for about 20 minutes - all the way to the big cemetery - Climb to the top of the cemetery for the trail. Note: Some of the trail is not very well marked or signed e.g. a sign like this beside some steps "<-- Wilson Trail -->" pointing up and down the mountain actually meant continue straight ahead - Guess who went up the mountain for 30 minutes only to have to backtack - Ah well it was a nice view! - Return: by bus to Lam Tin or any other MTR. Time taken: 3 hours

Hiking - Robins Nest, North East New Territories, Hong Kong

This is a recent hike I did after 4 weeks of neglecting my passion for ramblin' on the hills of Hong Kong.  It's on the border of the New Territories and Shenzhen, China.  There's a special area that's off limits to all but residents. To get there, I took the train to Fanling MTR then bus 78K towards Sha Tau Kok but you need to get off at Tseuk Leng San village before the checkpoint for the 'Closed Area Boundary'. I got kicked off the bus at the checkpoint because I didn't have a permit and was sent packing back towards Hong Kong.  Luckily it's only a ten minute walk back to Tseuk Leng San village.

The start of trail can be found by clambering up to the tall electricity pylon to the right of the village. I had to walk over some graves on a hill (I'll probably be sent to fiery depths of hell for that!) and thru some bushes but I'm sure there must be a better way!

The peak is 492 metres with decent views of mainland China and the warning sign below!

More pics and video below - Enjoy!

To return to civilization: Walk down Wo Keng Shan Rd back to Sha Tau Kok Rd where you can get the 78K bus back to Fanling MTR or the minibus 55K to Fanling town then connect to minibus for Fanling MTR

Time taken: 3.5 hours on the trail

Hong Kong HIKING Highlights

Take a look at the amount of green on the satellite image below and you can hopefully start to understand why Hong Kong is by far the best city in the world for easy and quick access to wonderful hiking trails. You might need to scroll around the map depending on your screen resolution.

What is interesting and somewhat bizarre as you look at this map is the concentration of the grey area where huge 50 storey apartment blocks are piled high, one next to the other as if there was no space available. Nothing could be further from the truth, but you’ll hear no complaints from hiking enthusiasts as they can access trails in minutes where other city dwellers might have to commute hours.

Attached below are my favourite hikes in Hong Kong that I've done so far.  I’ll add more as I do them but with over a thousand kilometres of trails it could take me a while to complete this blog post! I've also started to venture off the main trails where the terrain is a bit rougher but more rewarding.

If you have a hike you think should be listed here then just let me know in the comments below.
