Saint Paddy
The culture here is very different to anywhere else I've lived before but still in a positive and fascinating way. They eat strange stuff like birds nest soup and sharks fin soup. They drink strange stuff.
The photo below is a very popular energy drink here but with a rather unappealing name.
Here's another fav of the locals - Chickens feet.
Then there's pigs liver and pigs intestine. Turtle jelly where a turtle is boiled for about 12 hours. Chicken testicles either boiled or fried and owl soup including the head of the owl.
I can't say I've tried them all and can't say I ever will but it's a far cry from corn beef and cabbage! I've just realised I've spent the last 3 St Patricks Days on 3 different continents but the common denominator seems to be BEER!
Since legend has it that St Paddy cast the snakes out of Ireland, I must have another specialty around these parts in his honour i.e. some ssssssssssssnake soup (yep they eat that too!) or I might just settle for a pint o' Guinnessssssssssssssss!
HAPPY SAINT PADDYS DAY!

Happy St Paddy's Day Enda. . wherever you are . .you've been to more countries than Carmen Sandiego. Chicken feet are part of the Yum Cha culture here . . not my cup of tea I'm afraid, but you should have no trouble finding snake . . tastes like chicken!
It's all understandable when you think that food was traditionally less abundent over there.
Between starvation or horse c*ck, people opted for the latter instead of the former.
I knew a woman who had to make the same choice between that and celibacy...
(sorry, can't help myself)
Happy paddys day! Enjoy the er.. culinary delights :)
Happy paddy's-don't knock pig intestine....with a bit of ginger and garlic...mmmmmm..
I've committed a sin. It escaped me that we're anywhere near St. Patrick's day. Like you I've been on the move with no reliable internet connection. Once I got on the road I figured why not go all the way to the Pacific Ocean?
Cheers and hope you're enjoying the far east.
Happy You Day.
Welcome to my world. Pocari Sweat isn't that bad.

Happy St Paddy's Day,Paddy!
That's the place similar as the city I live now. Birds nest soup and sharks fin soup, Oh, yeah, They like them. Though I don't know why!
Hey, Pocari Sweat rocks! Kept me going in Japan anyway.
Even if I wasn't a vegetarian, I think I'd find the chickens' feet pretty repulsive. They just look too much like human hands. In fact they look as if they're about to jump up and grab my throat.
@Nick: I had a similar problem when I visited a friend in Sardinia, he cooked up a lovely meal of baby squid in a magic tomato based sauce, but I kept expecting them to leap off the plate and affix themselves to my face like in Alien.
@ iWalk: It's an acquired taste I'm sure
@ Thrifty: I'm more a Lucozade man
@ Nick: Pretty gross I'll agree and yes very human-ish
@ Thrifty: I had nightmares about that Alien scene for months!
I remember those things. Ugggh. I remember chewing on some weird dim sum entre and it turned out to be beef tendon and it was just chewy disgusting. I remember having to eat chilled jellyfish at a business dinner. Man, living over there you'll get to see a lot more than I ever did over there. Lucky!
If those feet were sold by a street vendor in some seedy area, I'd most likely eat a few dozen.
I hope you had a nice chicken-feet-free St. Paddy's day :) Even though I am a vegetarian, I tend to forget that when traveling. I probably ate all kinds of weird stuff hidden in some tasty gravy while on the road – though I’d probably draw the line if I would see some chicken feet ready to grab my throat :)
