Travel Hacking - Tip #7 - American Express & Twitter Sync

This hack is pretty simple but you need to have an American Express card. I have 9 AMEX credit cards so I collect 9 x times the bonus. AMEX offer so many deals like this you must get at least one card to take advantage. The idea here is simple

1. Sync your AMEX card and twitter account here
2. Repeat with each AMEX card you have (you can sign up for additional Twitter accounts using the gmail hack)
3. Tweet the required phrase mentioned on the AMEX link below
4. Buy from the merchant using your registered AMEX card
5. AMEX gives you a statement credit (in my case x 9 times)
e.g I bought Wholefoods grocery gift vouchers for $75 each x 9 times and got $20 back x 9 = $180 for free - bargain! -

I was instructed by a higher power to rekindle my passion with hiking. This is a 30 minute drive from where I live. The hike was from the Alpine Park HQ to the state line lookout. It's a 6 mile easy flat return trip with great views over the Hudson river - Enjoy!

Me: Let me think, ah yes, do ya remember the movie - Debbie Does Dallas? After that I think. {That was a little white lie – I’d confessed more recently}

Priest: Yes, that was one of my all time favs. Has it really been that long?

Me: I’m afraid so

Priest: So besides not hiking for 2 years do you have anything else you want to confess my son?

Me: Well, I took the name of the Lord my God - Steve Jobs in vain after Apple released the disappointing iPhone 4S

Priest: I see – anything else?

Me: No – that’s it – what’s my penance?

Priest: Say two Hail Mary’s and switch to an Android phone for 4 weeks and get back out on the hiking trails – pronto! – Go in peace my son and may God have mercy on you – ya heathen little fecker!

Travel Hacking - Tip #6 - Never Take No for an Answer

I applied last week for the Chase Freedom credit card which had a limited offer (the best I have seen for this card) for 35,000 points or u$d350 cash back bonus after spending just u$d500 within 3 months. That means you buy u$d500 of stuff you were going to buy anyway and you get u$d350 of a refund. i.e. easy money for nothing!

It offers exceptional bonus opportunities on it’s own and especially when combined with a Chase checking account, Chase Sapphire or Ink Bold credit card. I have all of the above but b.t.w. rest assured, I don't earn any commission from promoting credit cards or banks on this blog. I'm sharing these secrets just for the fun of it!

Alas I got the dreaded “we need more time to review your application” after hitting the submit button and received a letter yesterday to say I had been rejected due to “too many requests for credit or opened accounts with us” – boo hoo – how sad, too bad – maybe time to scale back on my credit card applications. The bonus offer got pulled within 24 hours so I first thought to myself, that I already have 5 credit cards with Chase so this was pushing it and I should just accept my fate.

The inner travel hacker in me wouldn’t lay down however, so I called the Chase reconsideration line on 888-245-0625 and quoted my rejection reference number and told the rep I was a long time (17 years) Chase customer and would like to be reconsidered for the card because I had never been late with a payment. The rep commented on my numerous open lines of credit and my recent application (2 months ago) for the United Explorer Card (where I got 50,000 points). I reinforced my hope to get the Freedom credit card and my good credit track record. The rep suggested I transfer some credit from my United card to the Freedom card so I agreed to transfer $6,800 of the $16,800 credit line and two minutes later I was approved. Travel Hacking - Tip #5 - Price Mistakes - Carpe Diem

This is more luck and perseverance than a hack. Sometimes you find a price for a flight, hotel etc online that seems too good to be true. In some cases it’s a mistake and usually gets corrected within minutes, hours or maybe as long as days. If you find a great deal, you need to act fast. Most companies will honor the price you reserved and booked even if it is an error.

e.g. While booking a weekend car rental last year, I stumbled upon an online rate for Hertz car rental for $19 per day (usually $70+ per day in the NYC metro area). I thought it must surely be a mistake but I went ahead and block booked every weekend from September until June (when the rate changed back to $70+). I have been enjoying super cheap rentals for the last six months. When I don’t need the car, I just cancel but I pick up the car most weekends because it’s so cheap. I also extended the rental for 2 weeks @ $19 per day over Christmas / New Year.

Since I'm renting so frequently I have Hertz Gold Five Star Status which gives me discounts, free upgrades and more points per rental.

Travel Hacking - Tip #4 - Topguest Foursquare Hack

UPDATE: YOU CAN NOW AUTO CHECK-IN on FOURSQUARE

Topguest partners with foursquare and a number of travel partners (hotels and airlines) to award points for check-ins with your smartphone. e.g. register with Topguest and connect your foursquare account and you get 50 points when you check in with foursquare at or near a Hilton hotel. Topguest offers many check-in bonuses so you could potentially earn hundreds of thousands of points per year with this hack. It depends on how much time you are willing to put in, but a few minutes per day can easily earn you hundreds of free miles per day.

This is a great way to make some extra points when you are traveling and taking flights and staying at hotels etc but why limit yourself to bonus points when you are traveling when you can get bonus points everyday with a little hack.

e.g. With United and Continental - You can get up to 100 mileage points every day = 36,500 free miles per year = up to 2 free domestic US return flights = per person. You can also sign up family members to multiply the bonus many more times.

What you need - First register with each of these Topguest partners if you want to maximize your miles or focus on just a few of your favs: e.g.

TopGuest United (Update 06/17: Link redirects to topguest with no option to enter United#)

If you decide to just focus on United miles do the following:

1.) Sign up for a free United Airlines frequent flier account if you don’t already have one

2.) Sign up for a new foursquare account (even if you already have one) and use the gmail hack so you don’t need to use a new email account (optional). Important: You need to use the same name in the new foursquare profile as you have for your United Airlines profile e.g. if your United profile has your name as Joseph Bloggs your new foursquare profile name should be Joseph Bloggs (this will ensure your miles get credited without any issues.)

3.) Register with TopGuest United and connect your new foursquare account

4.) If you are lucky enough to live or work or commute within a few miles of one of ‘these’ airports you simply need launch the foursquare app and login using the account you connected on the TopGuest - United link. Then select the airport and check-in. You will get a confirmation email shortly afterwards confirming you just earned 50 miles. Points usually show up within 24 hours.

If you are nowhere near one of these airports, you need to use the hack to spoof your location first then check-in as above. Open multiple foursquare accounts and link different United / Continental accounts or hotel accounts to repeat the above bonus / reward many times.

Travel Hacking - Tip #3 – Foursquare Spoof Check-in Location Hack

UPDATE: YOU CAN NOW AUTO CHECK-IN on FOURSQUARE

There are so many bonuses, discounts and rebates available with apps like foursquare but the problem is you often need to actually be near the location in order to ‘check-in’ to get the reward – right? – WRONG!

Even though the native foursquare phone app uses GPS and cell tower triangulation to restrict you from a check-in outside a certain radius of your actual location, you can spoof you location quite easily using your desktop computer or a standalone app on your phone. Basically, you can make it ‘appear’ as if you are in a certain location i.e. any location, even a different country. You can then ‘check-in’ to the spoofed location with foursquare to collect the reward. I currently use this hack to check-in with foursquare at an airport every day to collect 50 miles per check-in.

How to spoof your location so you can check-in to any location

1.) On your PC or MAC or phone you can first download Tweetdeck. Add your foursquare account and choose any location to check-in from or schedule a future check-in.

The limitation here is you can only add one foursquare account to Tweetdeck but it is so fast and simple to spoof your location this way.

2.) You can use the mobile version of foursquare on your computer or phone. Then choose the option to change your location. Follow the prompts and check-in to any location. It takes a few more steps than Tweetdeck but it still works.

3.) Phone Apps can be faster. For Android phones you can google ‘Location Spoofer for Android’ or ‘Fake GPS Location for Android’ and follow the instructions to install the app. For iOS you need to jailbreak your iPhone first then install an app like ‘LocationHolic’ from Cydia.

I use this method as it’s the fastest way to spoof your location for multiple foursquare accounts. I have 4 foursquare accounts setup specifically to collect a 50 mile per day check-in bonus at an airport (even though I’m not close enough to an airport). Do the math 4 x 50 x 365 = 73,000 FREE miles per year! (more to follow on that in the next blog post)

Travel Hacking - Tip #2 - Multiple Sign-ups (Gmail Hack)

This is a very useful hack to multiply a deal or bonus multiple times simply by registering a number of times with a different email address, since usually you can only sign up once for an offer with one email address. The best part is you don't even need multiple email addresses i.e. you can use just one email address numerous times using 'the gmail email hack'.

Let's say your gmail address is joseph.bloggs@gmail.com - If someone sends an email to any of the following:

j.osephbloggs@gmail.com
jo.sephbloggs@gmail.com
jos.ephbloggs@gmail.com
jose.phbloggs@gmail.com
josep.hbloggs@gmail.com
joseph.bloggs@gmail.com

...it will still reach YOUR inbox. Gmail strips out the dots (periods) from all gmail email addresses when they are received by the gmail servers, but almost every signup offer will consider the above variations as a separate and unique gmail address. Try it yourself and see. It really works! So if you want to sign up a number of times to get more than 1 bonus opportunity just move the dot (period) in your email as many times as you want.

I recently used this hack to sign up with jetsetter[dot]com who were offering a $25 credit for referring other people. I registered using my main email address and then referred the same email address ten times using the above hack i.e. I referred myself ten times. The people (me x 10) still needed to buy something before I received my referral bonus but that opportunity presented itself soon after, whereby I was able to take advantage of another great deal ten times. Travel Hacking - Tip #1 - Credit Cards

Travel Hacking - Tip #1: Credit Card promotions. I have earned over 1 million miles in less than 12 months without doing much travelling. I have more than 20 credit cards which I pay back in full each month to maintain excellent credit. This tip is mostly geared towards US residents and you do need to have good credit history. The deals outside the USA are not nearly as lucrative.

Don't just apply for any credit card offer. You have to be patient and wait for the mega promotions. I typically do not apply for a credit card offer of less than 40,000 bonus points/miles. You can find out about mega offers by monitoring just a few specialist blogs which I will list below. Note: Many of these blogs get a commission via the credit card links they offer their deals on. I have no issue with this because for the most part, they deserve it for saving you a lot of time searching for the best deals elsewhere. However, once I know a good offer is available, I always do some more research on the frequent flier forums just to see if the sponsored links the blogs are offering are really are the best deal available.

e.g. I heard about a 30,000 bonus mile promotion for opening a new Delta Airlines American Express card but when I searched the frequent flier forums I found a better bonus offer for 45,000 miles. So you need to find the best offer which is typically a web link posted by fellow travel hackers and apply.

Step #2 - Check the forums for potential better promos & offer codes

Step #3 - Apply for a personal and business card at the same time using the 2 browser trick. When you apply for a credit card, the application process often puts a tracking cookie on your computer and won't offer you the same deal twice. Using 2 different browsers gets around this limitation and will typically be only registered as one 'pull' from the credit bureaus.

Step #4 - Bump the bonus. Many credit cards will match the better bonus offered after you apply so long as you email it and request it within 60 days. Chase bumped my 50K Chase Sapphire bonus to 100K they were offering just a few targeted customers simply because I heard about the offer and asked them to.

What exactly is TRAVEL HACKING?

What exactly is Travel Hacking? If there is one thing better than traveling, it has to be traveling for cheap or better yet, for free. Travel hacking is about getting cheap or free flights, hotels, car rentals etc. This is usually done by racking up miles and points from limited promotions offered by credit cards, hotels or airlines. It is also done by knowing how and when to book flights, car rentals and hotels to snag the best available prices. Most people pay the standard price / the going rate for travel. People in the know pay less, sometimes much less, sometimes nothing at all i.e. FREE!

Hotel Review - Sheraton Miami Airport

The missus and I are in Florida for ‘Spring Break’. She has a week off between semesters so we flew Newark to Miami direct on the newly merged United/Continental. We spent the night at the Sheraton Miami Airport which is conveniently located right beside the car rental area and a picturesque golf course. Miami Beach Hotels are notoriously expensive ($300+) so we opted for the airport location 20 minutes away. I redeemed Starwood points for the stay and was able to use only 3,000 points for 1 night instead of a $200 standard rate (a great deal!)

When we checked in we were told because I was a Starwood ‘Plus’ member (simply because I have a Starwood AMEX card) we would get a ‘premium’ room facing the golf course and complimentary late checkout until 4pm (bonus!) We headed into South Beach, Miami and splurged on one the best restaurants in Miami called ‘OLA’ which serves food with a Latin American theme. Dinner & drinks total with tip came to a pricey $200 including valet parking ($20) but hey we’re worth it! We made the most of the valet parking by walking around Collins Ave for a few hours and people watching.

The hotel is ok (not great). There is a decent swimming pool and bar. The walls are a little thin and the rooms have those connecting room doors so you hear more of your neighbours than you would like to. We had major problems with our key cards not working and the morning staff not wanting to honour the late checkout but after a little persuasive complaining by the missus, the hotel waived the $15 parking fee and threw in 1500 points so our 1 night stay only cost us 1500 net points with free parking. That my friends was a bargain and starts the theme of the next few blog posts called ‘Travel Hacking!’

Its time to get back to basics. I'm giving up social media for Lent. Well, to be precise, ALL social media except for Facebook, Blogger, Google+ and Twitter. Give me some slack, as I have no desire to go full-on Opus Dei, but for 40 days and 40 nights, no more FriendFeed, Posterous, Flickr, YouTube, Picasa, Foursquare, Vimeo, etc etc. Wish me luck!..

How far can you run on an 'EMPTY' tank of gas?

I'm all about deals and bargains these days cos' of the economy don't ya know. I stumbled upon a u$d19 per day car rental rate a while back because to find a cheap rate, it can be difficult to search for car hire USA, so I block booked every weekend from October 2011 to June 2012 with the option to cancel and/or extend the weekend rental for as long as I like. Since we hadn't made concrete plans for Christmas / New Years I decided we would extend the 2 day rental to 16 days and drive from New Jersey to Florida (1,250 miles / 2,000 Kilometres) x 2 for the journey back.

The trip was great and escaping the cold North East Winter for the warmth of Florida beaches was shhhplendid. Herself doesn't drive (or have a license yet) so we took our time and stopped off plenty on the way there and back. I managed to avoid all pitfalls like breakdowns, flat tires, speeding tickets, getting lost etc. As we were close to home I noticed the tank was close to empty but I was in the express section of the highway and we were making good time and the warning light hadn't come on so I decided to 'let it ride' so to speak. Soon enough the needle was at the big 'E' for 'EMPTY' but I figured as soon as the fuel warning light came on I would turn off and get 'gas' aka petrol so no probs.

Finally the fuel warning light came on but I was now only about 10 miles from home and I remember seeing that episode from Seinfeld where Kramer pushes the boundaries of how far he can get on 'EMPTY' so I went for the same. Unfortunately, I didn't fair as well as Kramer and after 5 minutes I heard 'put-put-put' coming from the engine I knew we were doomed'. Luckily I was able to pull off at an exit and roll down to the toll booth exit where we called Hertz who called the NJ Turnpike Assistance who came and gave us 'emergency gas' for u$d37 so it could have been a lot worse. It will however remain one of my more unusual Facebook location check-ins.

Positive - My teeth are in great shape. The number of times I visited the dentist became a running joke in work (20+ visits) and I now have 3 shiney gold teeth (not a joke!) - apparently they are more durable.

Negative - I need to work 3 more years than originally planned to pay off my dentist

Positive - I am no longer dependent on public transport

Negative - I only have a bicycle

Positive - The bike only cost u$d100

Negative - The lock and 4 punctures (burst tire) have already cost me u$d300

Positive - My Dad turned 80 years old

Lunch with Johnathan Ross

So me and the missus have been driving around East Florida for the holidays and today we stopped into an organic cafe called 'The Jungle' for lunch in the middle of a no name town called Melbourne cos' herself is a part time vegan when she's not tossin' a cow on a barbie. It was hard not to notice the family at the table next to us, what with each of them having hair color a different shade of the rainbow and more body piercings than 'The Sex Pistols'. The missus says to me in a low whisper - "Do they not know Halloween is over?!"

We paid little attention to them after that and it was only when they were leaving that I caught a glimpse of the head of the group and I thought he looked familiar. That looks like Jonathan Ross, I said. - Who? - said the missus. Nah can't be I said. Why would he (a UK celeb) be hanging out with a bunch of pierced neon hair drop outs in Florida? Out of curiosity I decided to google "Jonathan Ross Family" and guess what I found..(taken a few years before the body 'art' I reckon)...

Best Time to Travel to Bermuda

I have been lucky enough to visit Bermuda twice and consider it one of my favourite island destinations. It's not your typical tropical island paradise in that it's not really tropical weather like you get in the Caribbean. There is a great laid back / safe vibe about the place (unlike many Caribbean islands.) It's hot (85F) but not sizzling in summer and mostly mild / cool in Winter except hurricane season (Oct-Nov). It's only a 2 hour flight from New York but can cost you a small fortune to visit in peak season (April-September). Flights can cost u$d500+ with beach front hotels costing up to u$d1,000 per night.

If you want to experience an amazing island with beautiful pink sand beaches you can do it for a fraction of the price in low season (November-March). I scored weekend flights for u$d150 in March and stayed at a waterfront B&B for u$d150 a night. There wasn't a great deal of WiFi when I was there so I'd recommend phone cards for calling home. Taxis are also very expensive but difficult to avoid on arrival at the airport. There are no car rentals allowed but there is a great and cheap bus service (not at airport) and you can rent a scooter/moped reasonably near the beaches.

The Office

I was browsing some old photos and found these pics which were taken when I worked in midtown Manhattan in 2004. I brought my missus to check it out. Not a bad view from my office back then. Now I have a windowless cube between the pantry and toilet in New Jersey. Where did it all go wrong?

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas..Anarchy!

The day after Thanksgiving in the USA is called Black Friday where bargains are to be had in the stores. Long lines of people, some queuing for days and sleeping in tents wait to snag that special bargain for that special someone. This year has seen a little more drama with one woman using pepper spray on people in the line and this little kerfuffle in Walmart (see vid below)

What the 'F' is Murmuration?

I had no idea what it was until today but now thanks to Paddy in BA - here's the official laymans explanation. Murmuration = Loads of birds (starlings) flying in formation like a swarm of very fast bees - Catch the amazing video after the break.
